My Boyfriend's Mother

Story by Debbie

Back in college, I had a boyfriend whose mother died from cancer during his senior year in high school. We had dated for about two months, when he decided that I should go home with him for a long weekend to see where he grew up, and to meet his dad. We got there rather late in the evening, and were ready to hit the hay right away.

There had been no discussion of his mother enroute to the house, or in weeks for that matter - in fact, he preferred not to talk about her at all. It was too fresh in his mind & made him very sad. His dad had made up a room for me downstairs in the walk-out basement. The room had a very large picture window that overlooked their farm & the mountains. It was a sleeper sofa, but quite comfy. We all said goodnight, & well, went to sleep.

I was awakened in the middle of the night by someone sitting on the edge of my bed. I rolled over, and had a look. It was a woman with dark hair, dressed in white from head to toe - although I could not see her feet. I should have been scared out of my mind, but instead felt comforted. She asked me if I was a good person. I told her yes. She asked me if I would take care of her son. Again, I said yes. She then asked me to follow her. I got out of bed, and followed her to my boyfriend's room. She did not walk - but rather "float-walked", for lack of better terminology... She then sat on the edge of his bed as he slept on, & I stood in the doorway watching her.

She looked at him lovingly and smiled. She then reached out and touched his head, but he still slept on. Then she said she had to go. I then followed her back to my room, she smiled again, & then disappeared. I went back to sleep. The next morning, I asked my boyfriend if he remembered what had happened. He thought I was nuts. We headed upstairs for breakfast, and I wandered into the living room to look at some family photos sitting there on the mantle. I hadn't been in that room the night before because we had all gone straight to bed.

I saw a picture of three women & two men. One of the women was the woman who had visited me the night before. I told my boyfriend that THIS was the woman I saw last night. He looked pale. I asked him what was wrong. He said that that was his mother, and that she had had her hospital bed set up in the room I was sleeping in so she could see the farm & mountains through the huge picture window as she died. The hospital bed had been exactly where my sleeper sofa was. I still get chills when I think about this, and I KNOW what I saw.
